Amsterdam is world famous for its coffee shops and smart shops as well as its tolerant attitude towards soft drugs. To be honest, many travel to Amsterdam having exactly that purpose in mind. However, there has been a lot of discussions about banning cannabis altogether, so if this is something you are planning to do we suggest you talk with your hotel and get a clearer idea of what is allowed and what’s not and avoid any disappointments or unpleasant encounters with the Dutch law forces.
Nightlife in Amsterdam – Coffee shops & smart shops
Amsterdam’s coffee shops are extremely popular and most are open from the morning till late in the night. One of our favorites is the Greenhouse, located in the Red Light District. With its laid back decor and wall of celebrity photos, it is a long time favorite of visitors. Abraxas coffee shop, down a narrow alleyway just south of Dam Square, is known not only for its quality cannabis – it also sells some of the best hash brownies in the city. Remember to listen to their advice carefully. There is also The Dampkring- a multiple award winner. Its stripy mellow vibe made a great location for the movie Oceans 12. If you visit Amsterdam, make sure to head down to one of its better coffee shops. Amsterdam’s tourism is buzzing thanks to places like these!
Since hallucinogenic mushrooms were banned in 2008, Amsterdam’s smart shops were left without their main product, and many closed down. Many of them replaced mushrooms with other ‘not yet illegal’ products, such as special “truffles”, for customers in search of a new high.
Pubs and clubs in Amsterdam
Looking for a party? Amsterdam nightlife has a diverse and bustling nightlife scene. Of course there is the Red Light district where people have been partying for 800 years. But you can find many pubs and clubs in other areas of the city, such as the Rain at Rembrandtplein – an always busy square in the center of Amsterdam. But our favorite location for going out is the Leidseplein area. There are many bars and restaurants as well as clubs to be found here. There is something for everyone’s wallet and tastes.
