San Francisco Japantown

Planning to visit some of San Francisco’s most interesting neighborhoods? This city has many unique areas that are really worth exploring, such as Chinatown or Haight Ashbury, but San Francisco’s Japantown must be the most special of all! Other cities like London and New York also have a Chinatown, but they don’t have Japantown… Here’s a few tips to make the most of your visit to this unique part of San Francisco.

Explore San Francisco’s Japantown area

This neighborhood is home for around 12,000 American Japanese, and it gives you a great opportunity to learn about the Japanese culture. Top attractions in the area include a 30 meter high pagoda, which was donated to the neighborhood by the people of the Japanese city of Osaka. Another great attraction is the Japanese mountain temple gate, which is conveniently located next to one of the shopping malls in Japantown – Osaka Way. If you are looking to do some shopping, the neighborhood is home of two more shopping malls: Kintetsu and Miyako, and countless little shops and restaurants in addition to that.

Not far from Japantown you will also find Alamo Square with its beautiful Victorian houses, and Nob Hill neighborhood with the Cable Car museum and the close by Huntington Park – watch our video guides to learn about other attractions in the area!
