Las Vegas Riviera Resort Area

THE RIVIERA RESORT IN LAS VEGAS NO LONGER EXISTS.

Away from the busy center of the Vegas strip and located at the north side of this famous boulevard (across the Circus Circus) used to be the Riviera hotel, which was closed in 2015. It opened fifty years ago, in 1955, making it the 9th resort on the Strip at that time. The hotel was known for its old vintage Vegas gambling vibe, that it managed to maintain through all those years. Frank Sinatra was one of the most notable performers that used to frequent the resort and many people came to see him perform here. A few years before it was closed, the Riviera resort served as film location for the movie Ocean’s 11 – starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon.

Even though the Riviera doesn’t exist anymore, there’s still plenty to discover in (former) Riviera Resort area. Popular attractions such as the Bellagio fountains, the Madame Tussaud’s museum and the Mandalay Bay Shark Reef might be a bit further away, but other top attractions are just a few minutes of walking from the former hotel & casino.

Explore the Riviera Resort area in Las Vegas

Let’s begin with the Circus Circus: one of the most popular family resorts in the city because of its free circus acts, which are starting every day at 11 am. This includes jugglers, trapeze artists, aerial acrobats, and roller skaters. Also the Adventuredome Theme Park is located within this resort, offering many exciting attractions and rides for all ages spread over 5 acres. And it’s all indoor, so you don’t have to suffer from the sometimes intolerable hot Vegas temperatures. The Midway Arcade Hall is situated at the Circus Circus too, where kids and their parents can enjoy a huge selection of games.

Next, a 1.5 km (0.9 mile) walk away from the Circus Circus, you can find the popular Stratosphere Casino, Hotel and Tower. We know walking can be tiring, especially when it’s hot outside, but we can promise you that this walk is well worth it! This 350 meter high tower has an observation deck and the panoramic view from up there is truly spectacular. It’s open every day from 10 am till 1 am, on Fridays and Saturdays even until 2 am giving you the opportunity to see the city illuminated after dark. You will get free access if you hold the Las Vegas Power Pass.

But there’s more! Also on top of the Stratosphere Tower, you can find 4 crazy thrill rides: the X-Scream, Insanity, Big Shot and SkyJump (which is technically not a ride, but the highest controlled descent, simulating a freefall). These Stratosphere rides are only for the real dare devils among you and will leave you with pumping adrenaline for the rest of the day… Big Shot is in fact the world’s highest thrill ride at 329 meters (1081 ft) high, followed by the Insanity on 2nd place and the X-Scream ranking third.
