San Francisco Lombard Street

Lombard Street in San Francisco is one of the most photographed streets in town, who knows- maybe even worldwide! Here’s a couple of things you need to know about this very special street in San Francisco…

Get to know Lombard St San Francisco

When most people think about San Francisco roads, they think about steep and hilly roads, and this is exactly what made Lombard street so famous. A small section on top of Russian Hill reaches 27 degrees and makes it too dangerous to most vehicles. In 1923 some of this section was transformed into 8 sharp turns, and the sight of drivers maneuvering down the road has become a popular tourist attraction. Some tourists just watch the “show”, others get in a rental car themselves to drive up the steep hill to experience it for themselves.

Our tip for first time visitors is to leave the car behind and explore that road using the famous cable cars. By the way, you should probably know that Lombard st San Francisco is not the steepest street in the city, actually Filbert street holds that record with 31 degrees, but Lombard street is more photogenic!
