So here you are, on your way to Nieuwmarkt. Located on the old side of the city just east of Damrak and Rokin, this is a great chance to enjoy a unique culinary experience while sightseeing the old town’s top landmarks. Stop for a snack in one of the Asian restaurants, admire the Buddhist temple or the old Bethany Convent, do some shopping in the many shops, or head to the ultimate meeting place and the beating heart of the old city – the Dam Square. The Red Light District and Oudezijds Burgwal – the oldest part of the city – are nearby as well.

The Nieuwmarkt square used to be a canal, but it was filled in the 17th century. Now it’s a square that’s surrounded with cafes and restaurants, and with a daily market. An interesting monumental building that you can see there is the Waag (the Weighing House), it has a very long history that’s worth exploring. Dating back from 1488, is has had lots of different functions, inside you will find a very charming cafe restaurant that is lid by 300 candles.
