In the 17th century, the Palace Royal served as the personal residence of Cardinal Richelieu. After his death, the palace became the property of the King and became a royal residence. Louis XIV spent most of his childhood here before moving to the Louvre. In the midst of the revolution during the 1800’s the palace was mobbed and nearly destroyed in a fire. It used to house gambling dens and cafes and also served as a one of the most important theaters in Paris.
