New York Rockefeller Center
The Rockefeller Center in New York, also known as Radio City, is a complex of 14 commercial buildings spread on 22 acres, located in Midtown Manhattan. It was designed by the architect Raymond Hood in an Art Deco style. The construction of this complex took 9 years to be completed.
This was not the original plan for this area though… Actually, it was supposed to be the ground where the Metropolitan Opera would be built by John D. Rockefeller, but after the big market crash in 1929, Rockefeller changed his plans for the grounds and came up with the idea of this corporate complex. That’s how the Rockefeller Center became home to the radio and television corporations in New York City.
There is a special tour to learn more about the many things this complex has to offer, it’s called the Rockefeller Center Tour and it is free for those of you who purchased the New York City pass. This tour will take you along the Fifth and Sixth Avenue, where an expert guide will explain to you everything you want to know about Radio City and the area. You will be able to visit the tallest and the first building that was built in the complex- the RCA which is also known as ’30 Rock’ or the GE Building.
Explore the Rockefeller Center
On the top of the GE building you’ll find the Top of The Rock – an observatory deck with wonderful views over the whole city. The Lower Plaza is where the annual event of NY’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony takes place since 1933. An enormous tree is installed behind the famous statue of Prometheus, decorated with many lights. A true spectacle! And every winter, you can do ice skating on the sunken plaza.
For some shopping in the area, go to the Fifth Avenue – explore trendy shops and the most famous designer names in the fashion world (such as Prada, Versace, Louis Vuitton and Chanel). You’ve probably seen this street before, as many movies and tv shows have been filmed here.
If you already hold the City Pass, then why not squeeze a visit to the nearby MoMA in your day program and enjoy the biggest collection of modern art in New York City in this superb museum!
